Dogs love their toys, but more importantly, they need their toys. Dog toys provide not only something to keep them occupied when they are alone for long periods of time, such as when you are at work or when you go on a trip, but they waylay the dangerous problem of boredom.
A bored dog is a destructive dog and a destructive dog is one that can cause divisions and anger within your household. So, it is important to have good toys on hand for your dog that will last, are safe, and keep them from being bored.
Top Dog Toy Brands
There are hundreds of dog toy brands out there, but you need to be sure the ones you pick are of the highest quality while also being safe. Here are three examples of quality companies that produce good dog toys:
Kong - Kong’s high quality rubber chew toys not only withstand just about any kind of a beating your dog can lay on them, they are made to be safe, in a wide variety of sizes for any type of dog. Kongs also feature brain working aspects that keep your dog from being bored.
Tuffies - Tuffies creates soft dog toys that are meant to withstand your dog’s busy jaws. They don’t tear apart like stuffed animals and they aren’t filled with dangerous stuffing that can make them sick if they swallow it.
Planet Dog - The goal of Planet Dog is socially responsible dog toys that provide what dogs actually need in a toy while keeping them interested. Creative designs, well made rubber, and thick ropes make for durable, brain bending toys that will keep your dog busy for hours.
Types of Dog Toys and How to Pick the Right Ones
Dogs will play with just about anything, but you need to be sure that the dog toys you buy for them are going to be safe while at the same time work their brains. Problem solving toys, like those provided by Kong and Planet Dog force them to find treats, roll pieces out of the toy, or catch a certain part of it.
By working the mind of your dog, you minimize the frustration and boredom that can lead to problem behavior later down the line.
Rubber bones and chews are also good toys for larger dogs or those with aggressive chewing tendencies because they are harder to break, and will last for days or weeks. Squeaky toys are also good choices because they stimulate the dog’s mind, as they attack the toy whenever it squeaks. They satisfy their instincts and have fun while doing it. It can be obnoxious to have a toy constantly squeaking in the house though, so keep this in mind before buying it for them.
Another popular and effective dog toy choice is the toy rope. Toy ropes are great because they are mentally stimulating and good for your dog’s teeth. Keep in mind that many dog experts recommend against playing tug-o-war with your dog and their toys, but don’t worry, they’ll have just as much fun with the rope on their own.
When you pick the right dog toys for your furry best friend, you do a tremendous amount of good for them. Have a few good toys on hand, swap them out often, and most of all, have fun with your dog.
